Liqeni i Tiranës, Tirana: a renter’s guide

Living by the Artificial Lake means having the Grand Park as your back garden, which makes this one of the capital’s most desirable and dearest places to rent. For expat families the schools are a draw: Montessori International School of Tirana and Shkolla Woodrow Wilson are nearby, along with Universiteti Barleti and the Polytechnic University. Line L2 stops at Tuneli. Ask whether a flat faces the park or the street; the difference in light and noise is considerable.

Where it is

Tirana’s southern edge is taken up by the Grand Park and its Artificial Lake. The park begins where Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit ends, behind the University of Tirana and close to Rruga e Elbasanit. To the north lie Blloku and Tirana e Re; west, Komuna e Parisit and Selitë; south and east, Liqeni i Thatë and Sauk. A flat “by the lake” could be in any of them, so ask for the exact address.

Inside the park

Some 120 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants grow here. Along its paths are the Palace of Brigades, today used by the President, the Church of St Procopius, an amphitheatre, the Frashëri brothers’ graves, the Zoo and the Botanical Garden.

Nearby

The Polytechnic University and Barleti University, the Woodrow Wilson school, Montessori International School of Tirana and Amavita Hospital are around the park. The nearest bus stop, “Tuneli”, is on line L2.

Living here

The lake was formed in 1955 behind a 400-metre dam that volunteers built, and the park was landscaped in 1955–58. The homes around it sit among greenery, and running, cycling and walking by the water are part of daily life for many residents.
