Blloku, Tirana: a renter’s guide

If you want to walk everywhere and live among cafés, shops and offices, Blloku is the obvious first place to look in Tirana. The trade-off is cost: demand is high and there is little room left to build, so prices per square metre are among the steepest in Albania and rents follow. Flats range from older apartments to newer blocks between the villas. Buses L1, L2, L13 and the Green Line (L16) stop on the edges, and the Faculty of Law and the University of the Arts are close. Before signing above a bar, visit on a weekend night.

Where it is

Blloku (“the Block”) belongs to Tirana e Re, in Administrative Unit no. 5. From Skanderbeg Square it is a 10–15 minute walk, around 800 metres to the south.

Life here

Cafés, bars, restaurants and shops make it the hub of Tirana’s nightlife. Enver Hoxha’s former home is here, and the Selman Stërmasi stadium stands on the edge of the area by the Lana river. The Faculty of Law, the University of the Arts, the German Hospital and Amavita Hospital are close.

Who it suits

If you want to walk to the office, to restaurants and to the centre, Blloku puts it all on your doorstep. If sleep matters, ask which way the bedroom windows face and view the flat in the evening, when the bars are full.

Housing and history

Up to 1991 the area was off limits: only the Party of Labour leadership lived here, and ordinary Albanians could not go in. Once it opened, many apartment blocks were built among the older villas.

Getting around

L1A/L1B, L2, L13 and the Green Line stop nearby, at “Sheshi Willson” and “Piramida” among others.
