Laprakë, Tirana: a renter’s guide

Laprakë suits people whose life pulls them north-west: Rruga Dritan Hoxha, next to the area, leads onto the Tirana–Durrës motorway, and several shopping centres are nearby. The housing mixes older blocks with newer ones. Several bus lines pass, among them L4 Qendër–Vorë, L5B and L6, which is named after the neighbourhood. The Sports University and Universiteti Zoja e Këshillit të Mirë are close, as are two hospitals, which is handy for medical staff.

Where it is

Laprakë lies north-west of the centre, about 3 km from Skanderbeg Square, and Administrative Unit no. 11 is run from here, from an office on Rruga Gjergj Legisi.

Hospitals and universities

Two hospitals stand here: the University Trauma Hospital on Rruga Lord Bajroni, founded in 1929 as the Military Hospital, and, on Rruga Marubi, American Hospital 1. Our Lady of Good Counsel University and the Sports University are also nearby, which makes Laprakë a practical base for their students and for hospital staff.

Getting around

Line L6 Laprakë–Qendër runs straight to the centre. From stops such as “Spitali Traumës” and “Pallatet Arabe” you can also catch L3 (Astir), L4 Qendër–Vorë, L5B Institut–Qendër and L13 (Tirana e Re).

Housing and history

Before 1990 the neighbourhood stopped at three edges: the Tirana river, Rruga Don Bosko and Rruga e Durrësit. After that the unit has swollen from around 10,600 people to around 65,000, most of them families who came from the country’s north-east. Further south is the airfield laid out in 1934–35 to serve as Tirana’s airport; today government helicopters use it.
