Astir, Tirana: a renter’s guide

Astir, on the western side of the city by the ring road, is where you get more square metres for your money than in the centre. Most of the stock is newer apartment blocks, so a 2+1 here is often roomier and cheaper than its central equivalent. Lines L3A and L3B, named after the area, and L13 to Tirana e Re take you into town. Tirana Business University and American Hospital 3 are nearby. Traffic on the ring road can be heavy, so try the commute at rush hour before you sign.

Where it is

Astir sits on Tirana’s western side, roughly 3 km from Skanderbeg Square, right beside Unaza e Madhe, the outer ring road, and not far from the Shqiponja junction. Yzberisht, Kashar and Mëzez surround it.

Getting around

The ring road is how the area connects with every other part of Tirana, whether you drive or take the bus. Line L3 (Astir) and the L13 Tirana e Re lines call at nearby stops such as “Tom Plezha” and “Kryqëzimi Kashar”.

Nearby

American Hospital 3 and Tirana Business University are close. Paperwork with the municipality goes through the Lagjja nr. 14 office, which also serves Yzberisht and the strip along the ring road; before it opened, residents had to travel to 21 Dhjetori, Kombinat or Kashar.

Housing and history

Building in Astir began in the mid-1990s, when this was still the edge of town, and most of it went up without permits; owners later went through the state legalisation process. Some buildings came down when the ring road was widened. Today it is tightly built, with apartment blocks and private houses next to each other, so a search here can turn up both flats and whole houses. Ask to see the owner’s property papers before you hand over a deposit.
